Bulldogs earn electrifying 7-on-7 win during Burnet state qualifying tourney
The Burnet 7-on-7 team finished 1-2 at its state qualifying tournament May 28.
The Bulldogs defeated Taylor in thrilling fashion. In overtime with Burnet trailing 25-18, senior quarterback Tanner O’Hair found junior receiver Grant Jones for the touchdown and the two hooked up again for the two-point pass and the 26-25 win. Burnet lost to Gatesville 27-13 and to McGregor 30-12.
Head coach Bryan Wood noted the Bulldogs didn’t play like themselves to start the tournament when they faced Gatesville.
“We didn’t have much energy,” he said. “The second game was way better. We fought in that one. We went for the win and got that. They were excited. (Against McGregor) we turned it over way too much. But we were here competing. It was our first rodeo in a state qualifying tournament.”
He noted he saw some play he liked and some areas of improvement. Top of the list of likes were the number of Bulldogs who played.
“All of our 7-on-7 stuff is in our scheme, it’s what we do on Thursday and Friday nights,” he said. “We’re going to play. And if so, we’re working on stuff that’s helping us. It’s getting us in the correct coverages cause you have to adjust coverages. You have to adjust your coverages correctly.”
While the title is 7-on-7, Wood pointed out it’s typically 5-on-7 because someone has to snap the ball to the quarterback who can’t run for positive yards. Meanwhile, the defense is dropping back seven players to defend against five receivers.
“Quarterbacks are at a disadvantage,” he said. “A lot of games today ended at 13-15, 15-14.”
The Bulldogs will play in the Brownwood state qualifying tournament June 4.
